IBS Awareness

What is IBS? Irritable Bowl Syndrome is an intestinal disorder causing pain in the belly, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. It affects up to 15% of the population and is more common in women. Despite the fact that it is such a common problem, it is extremely intricate and entirely based on your body. Research is ongoing, so medical professionals are much more equipped to help you manage your symptoms now in comparison to even a few years ago! Focusing on eating nutritious, balanced meals, incorporating movement regularly, and talking to a licensed medical professional are key in managing symptoms. Additionally, IBS can be triggered by immense stress. Support groups can be found worldwide and talking with a therapist can help you develop healthy and achievable coping mechanisms. Sometimes, medication is required to treat IBS. If your symptoms are affecting your daily life, it is important to speak with your doctor about your next steps. A registered dietitian (RD) can help you figure out what foods will work best with your gut and nourish your body without causing gastrointestinal and emotional distress.
