Eating Disorders and Bone Health
If you are struggling with an eating disorder where you are restricting food intake, your body can begin to shut down essential hormones (ie. estrogen and progesterone) that regulate the menstrual cycle.
As a result, someone can be at a much higher risk for developing osteoporosis. Low levels of estrogen lead to decreased bone production and increased bone absorption. Stress on the body can also trigger the release of elevated levels of cortisol that accelerate bone absorption.
Injuries, bone collapse, repeat fractures, and height loss are common symptoms. Consider reaching out to a trained professional that can get you back on the right track with supplements, meal planning, and supervised movement.
